What happens next

NJDOT expects the northbound ramp to Falcon and Triangle Roads to stay closed through late fall 2026. On Route 206 applications, the Planning Board takes up a fourth extension for the Cyzner mixed-use project at 420/430 Amwell Road, which awaits NJDOT approval, on November 5; the Zoning Board's decision deadline for the Flagship car wash is November 12; and the Phoenix Carriage Farm brewery and townhouse plan is set for the Zoning Board on December 2, 2026.

Route 206 is Hillsborough’s main north–south road, and it is a state highway: NJDOT, not the township, designs, funds and builds the work on it. NJDOT has been rebuilding it in stages.

Doctors Way to Valley Road. Construction began in March 2021 on a “$42 million contract” to widen this stretch to two lanes each way with a concrete median and new jughandles. NJDOT halted the work in 2023 and ended its contract with the first contractor; a new contractor resumed work in 2024. NJDOT’s project page still says “Scheduled Completion: Fall 2026”, but it has not been updated since February 27, 2025. Since June 8, 2026 the northbound ramp to Falcon and Triangle Roads has been closed, with a detour via Opie Road, which NJDOT expects to last through late fall 2026. When the median barrier is finished, left turns into and out of roadside properties will end.

Valley Road to Brown Avenue. The next stage is in the regional transportation plan at $130.918 million, including replacement of the railroad bridge over Route 206. Design money is programmed for 2026 and construction money for 2027–2029. A separate NJDOT project, $34.5 million, would replace the 1918 Hamilton Road bridge over the railroad, with construction money only in 2030–2035.

The township’s part. The township replaced the Route 206 pedestrian bridge over Royce Brook, closed in February 2025 for corroded steel, under a $273,000 contract. It reopened with a ribbon cutting in July 2026. The Zoning Board approved a Chick-fil-A at Route 206 and Triangle Road 5–2 in May 2026, on condition that it cannot open until NJDOT’s road improvements there are finished. A car wash and a brewery-and-townhouse plan are pending.

What residents can do. Follow NJDOT’s project page and ask NJDOT for an updated schedule. Comment on corridor applications at the Planning and Zoning Boards, whose files are posted on the township’s CivicClerk portal before each hearing.
