Route 206 in Hillsborough, Explained
NJDOT has been widening Route 206 between Doctors Way and Valley Road since 2021. The job stopped in 2023 when the state ended its first contract, restarted in 2024, and still carries a "Fall 2026" target on a state page last updated in February 2025. This explainer covers that project, the $130.918 million next stage to Brown Avenue, the Hamilton Road railroad bridge, the township's pedestrian bridge, the ramp closure, and the business applications along the corridor.
What is being built
Route 206 is Hillsborough’s main north–south road. It is a state highway, so the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) designs, pays for and builds the work on it. The township’s role is to coordinate, report to residents and review what gets built beside the road.
NJDOT is rebuilding the road in sections. Press coverage calls them phases; NJDOT’s own page does not use those labels.
| Section | Who | Cost | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 206 Bypass, Mountain View Road to Old Somerville Road | NJDOT | n/a | Opened 2021 |
| Doctors Way to Valley Road | NJDOT | $42 million contract | Under construction; state target “Fall 2026” |
| Valley Road to Brown Avenue | NJDOT | $130.918 million estimate | Design programmed for 2026, construction 2027–2029 |
| Hamilton Road bridge over the railroad | NJDOT | $34.5 million estimate | Design and right-of-way programmed for 2026; construction in 2030–2035 |
| Pedestrian bridge over Royce Brook | Township | $273,000 contract | Finished July 2026 |
Doctors Way to Valley Road
NJDOT’s project page describes a “$42 million contract” covering Route 206 from south of Doctors Way to about half a mile north of Valley Road. The work includes:
- two lanes in each direction with a concrete median barrier;
- jughandles at Triangle Road, Valley Road and near Camplain Road;
- regrading Falcon Road to meet the new road, with a temporary detour via Opie Road;
- a replaced culvert near Valley Road and a new bridge over a tributary of Royce Brook;
- drainage basins, new lighting and upgraded traffic and pedestrian signals.
How it got here.
- March 2021. Construction began (Hillsborough Beacon).
- May 2022. The southbound noise wall between Farm Road and Doctors Way was finished (NJDOT).
- 2023. NJDOT halted the work and ended its contract with the first contractor, Konkus Corporation. The Beacon reported the halt in April 2023; Patch reported May 2023. LocalWhy did not find an NJDOT document giving the date or the terms.
- August 2024. Work resumed under a new contractor, Roman Asphalt (Patch).
- February 27, 2025. NJDOT last updated its project page. It says “Scheduled Completion: Fall 2026”, with the final stage, the median barrier and final paving, to “start spring 2026”.
- November 2025. The state reported to the township that all stormwater detention basins and their fences were complete. Utilities were still being relocated.
- April 10–11, 2026. Overnight stoppages while crews built the new northbound lane. Work on the Valley Road bridge and sidewalks was under way (Patch).
- June 8, 2026. The northbound Route 206 ramp to Falcon Road and Triangle Road closed, with a detour via Opie Road. NJDOT expects the pattern “to remain in place through late fall 2026” (WRNJ, relaying NJDOT). NJDOT also said the new median barrier “will eliminate left turns to and from properties” along the road.
Where it stands. The road is still under construction. NJDOT’s official completion target remains fall 2026, but the page giving it is 20 months old, and most of its interim dates have passed. LocalWhy found no newer NJDOT schedule.
NJDOT also told the township in 2025 that it plans a separate resurfacing contract for the older section of Route 206 from Oxford Place to Hamilton Road. No date was given.
Valley Road to Brown Avenue
The next section north is in the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), the list of federally funded projects for the region, as project DB 780A, with an estimated total cost of $130.918 million. It would widen Route 206 “from two lanes to a four lane dualization”, move two traffic signals and add two jughandles, and replace “the railroad bridge over Route 206”. The TIP says it will be “bicycle/pedestrian compatible.”
| Phase | FY2026 | FY2027 | FY2028 | FY2029 | 2030–2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Design | $6.0M | ||||
| Construction | $3.0M | $50.0M | $46.0M | $21.5M |
In June 2025 the township was told that NJDOT had planned funding for this phase, including the bridge, in 2027–2030. Money programmed in the TIP can still move; it is a plan, not a contract.
The Hamilton Road railroad bridge
A separate NJDOT project, DB 14416, would replace the Hamilton Road bridge over the railroad, an “orphan bridge, built in 1918”, at an estimated $34.5 million. The new bridge would be raised to clear the railroad and would have a sidewalk on its north side. NJDOT’s draft capital program shows $5.6 million for design and $3 million for right-of-way in fiscal 2026. Construction money, $25.9 million, appears only in 2030–2035. The state’s records call the railroad “Conrail” in the title and “CSXT” in the description.
The township’s pedestrian bridge
The Route 206 sidewalk bridge over Royce Brook, between Raider Boulevard and Amwell Road, is a township project, separate from NJDOT’s work.
- February 11, 2025. The bridge was found to have “corroded steel”, and the township closed it to pedestrians.
- November 25, 2025. The Committee unanimously awarded Capela Construction a $273,000 contract for the replacement (R-312-2025, listed as the “Pennington Properties Pedestrian Bridge Replacement”).
- February–March 2026. Fabrication began. The township said it could take up to 12 weeks. Final curb ramps and crosswalks at Beekman Lane, Auten Road, Raider Boulevard and the post office were to be installed once the new traffic signal work is completed.
- July 2026. The bridge reopened with a ribbon cutting, reported at the July 28 meeting.
- September 22, 2026. The Committee released the contractor’s performance bond and accepted its maintenance bond (R-295-2026), closing out the job.
Business applications along the corridor
Most of Hillsborough’s commercial frontage is on Route 206, and the township’s Town Center zone around Amwell Road and Route 206 is meant to be walkable and mixed-use. Applications there must first go to the Planning Board for an informal review. In 2025–2026 the corridor drew several drive-through and auto uses.
- Chick-fil-A, 296 Route 206 at Triangle Road (approved). The Zoning Board of Adjustment approved a 5,400-square-foot restaurant with two drive-through lanes on the site of an Exxon station 5–2 on May 6, 2026. It needed a use variance, because drive-throughs are not allowed in that zone, plus four bulk variances and nine waivers. The key condition: no certificate of occupancy until the Route 206 and Triangle Road improvements are completed to the satisfaction of NJDOT and the board engineer. So the restaurant cannot open before NJDOT finishes that part of the road. The resolution was memorialized September 2, 2026. Zoning Board meetings are not video-recorded.
- Flagship car wash, 425 Route 206 (pending). A plan to demolish a vacant bank and build a 13,955-square-foot car wash had its informal Planning Board review on April 16, 2026. Its Zoning Board application (BA-25-15) has a decision deadline of November 12, 2026.
- Phoenix Carriage Farm, 2 Clerico Lane (pending). Walk-up restaurants, 46 two-story townhouse apartments and an amphitheater behind the existing brewery, on a property listed as Historic Site #36, the “Van Nuys House”. The Zoning Board carried the application to December 2, 2026.
- Cyzner mixed-use project, 420/430 Amwell Road (extension pending). Two mixed-use buildings with a clock tower, approved in 2021. On November 5, 2026 the Planning Board will consider a fourth extension, to May 17, 2027, “to obtain a final outside agency approval from NJDOT”.
- Withdrawn: a three-story, 710-unit self-storage building at 269/271 Route 206.
What is not known
- The real finish date. NJDOT has not published an updated schedule since February 2025. Its “Fall 2026” target has been repeated by officials, but not confirmed by a newer NJDOT document.
- When the ramp reopens and when the median barrier and final paving will be finished.
- Why the first contract ended. NJDOT has not published the terms of the termination, and the month (April or May 2023) differs between press accounts.
- When Valley Road to Brown Avenue starts, whether Route 206 traffic will be detoured during the railroad bridge replacement, and which railroad owns that bridge. The TIP does not say.
- Where one project ends and the next begins. The current job ends at milepost 68.00; the next starts at 67.5. The record does not explain the overlap.
- The Hamilton Road bridge’s closure and detour plans.
What residents can do
- Ask NJDOT. The project page is the state’s official record. Residents can ask NJDOT for an updated completion date and ramp plan.
- Watch the boards. Route 206 applications come to the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Planning Board. Agendas and application files are posted on the township’s CivicClerk portal before hearings, and residents may comment on each application. Upcoming: the Cyzner extension (Planning Board, November 5), the car wash (decision deadline November 12) and Phoenix Carriage Farm (Zoning Board, December 2).
- Speak at the Township Committee. The Committee hears public comment at its regular meetings, at 7:30 p.m. on November 24 and December 15, 2026. Route 206 updates are often part of its reports.
