The Former Belle Mead Depot: A Solar Lease, a Settled Lawsuit and a Federal Cleanup
The Army's former Belle Mead depot in Hillsborough is now owned by the Somerset County Improvement Authority; the township holds land there under a lease-purchase agreement. Hillsborough subleased part of that land to a solar developer in 2023. A lawsuit delayed the project until the Committee approved a settlement in February 2026, and the sublease deadlines were extended in March. The federal government is asking for $33,652,000 more to finish the cleanup.

Flooding and Stormwater in Hillsborough: New Flood Maps, a New Ordinance, and the Work Since Ida
FEMA's revised flood maps for Hillsborough take effect on November 13, 2026, the date FEMA set in an August 2026 Federal Register notice. Ordinance 2026-10, which adopts the maps and rewrites the township's flood rules, has its hearing on November 10. Since Ida in 2021 the township has rebuilt a damaged basin, joined the state's Blue Acres buyout program, adopted a long-range drainage plan and started a state-required watershed plan.

The state estimated 565 affordable homes. The township committed to 270, then adopted a plan that says 223 can realistically be planned for now and claims 300 credits. Twelve parties challenged it, a court mediator recommended a finding that it is not yet compliant, and settlements are being made one by one. What each number means, where the case stands and what is still not public.

Hillsborough bought the roughly 440-acre Mindel tract for $14 million in January 2022. In 2026 the Township Committee voted to sell the land's development rights to the State Agriculture Development Committee at $30,600 an acre, and the state gave final approval on April 30 for 438.81 acres. The Picket Place Bridge Replacement, Explained
Somerset County is replacing the 1979 Picket Place (County Route 567) bridge over the South Branch of the Raritan, which links Hillsborough and Branchburg. This explainer covers why the bridge is being replaced, the proposed design, the schedule, what is not known, and how to follow it.

Hillsborough's Police Technology, Explained
Hillsborough's police use Flock Safety license-plate cameras, which photograph passing plates. The Committee bought eight more in October 2025 for $28,000, and an $82,000 Flock payment was on the August 2026 bill list. Residents raised the cameras at two meetings in August and September 2026. State rules, not the township, set how long the data is kept and who can see it. This explainer also covers the police drones, body cameras, the station renovation and the Arrive Together crisis-response program.

Roads and Paving in Hillsborough: The 2026 Program, Montgomery Road and the Grants
Hillsborough repaves roads by yearly contract, treats others with chip seal and similar surfaces, and uses state grants for single roads. The 2026 repaving contract ($695,616.65) started in September. Montgomery Road has been discussed since 2025, when the Committee compared the cost of chip seal with full paving; a resident and the Sourland Conservancy objected in July 2026, and the Committee approved a $186,392.70 chip-surface treatment for Montgomery Road in September. Farm Road has a $505,903 state grant, and Flemming Drive is getting new sidewalks.

NJDOT has been widening Route 206 between Doctors Way and Valley Road since 2021. The job stopped in 2023 when the state ended its first contract, restarted in 2024, and still carries a "Fall 2026" target on a state page last updated in February 2025. This explainer covers that project, the $130.918 million next stage to Brown Avenue, the Hamilton Road railroad bridge, the township's pedestrian bridge, the ramp closure, and the business applications along the corridor.
