The Stirling Road bridge closure, explained
Why County Bridge No. L1014 is being replaced, what the county closed on August 3, the detour routes for cars and trucks, and what the record says about reopening.
County project and bridge
The bridge carrying Stirling Road, County Route 653, over Stony Brook is County Bridge No. L1014. Somerset County is carrying out the replacement. Warren’s role in the records reviewed is to announce the closure.
The county held a virtual public information meeting on Oct. 26, 2022, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. Display boards showed existing conditions, the construction plan, the bridge plan and elevation, the detour plan, a parcel map, and a project information sheet. The truck detour was updated on Feb. 3, 2026. The county awarded the construction contract to Underground Utilities Corporation on March 24, 2026. It held the pre-construction meeting on May 19, 2026.
The existing structure is a single-span slab. It has embedded structural steel stringers on concrete abutments. The span is 19 feet and the clear roadway width is 33 feet. The county rates the structure poor overall due to parapet, deck, and superstructure deterioration. It rates the substructure satisfactory. The replacement is a single-span precast rigid frame superstructure. It has concrete parapets on reinforced concrete abutments. The roadway width at the bridge rises from 33 feet to 40 feet to meet New Jersey Department of Transportation standards. The project is funded by a FY2023 New Jersey Department of Transportation Local Bridge Future Needs grant.
Closure and detours
The county closed Stirling Road between Community Place and Dillon Court at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. The bridge is closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Driveway access is maintained.
General traffic can detour using Mountain Avenue (CR 622) and Hillcrest Road (CR 531). Trucks weighing over four tons must use Valley Road (CR 512), King George Road (CR 651), Mount Bethel Road (CR 651), and Mountain Boulevard (CR 527).
The Township posted ‘Stirling Road Bridge Closure Begins August 3’ on July 30, 2026, stating that the county’s contractor would close and detour the road that Monday, with reopening anticipated in mid-December 2026, and listing the same detour routes. The Echoes-Sentinel reported the closure on Aug. 3, describing the detours, the county contractor and driveway access, and attributing the mid-December reopening date to a Warren Township release. A TAPinto item on the project names Community Place and Dillon Court; its full text did not load, so only the headline and search summary were available.
Schedule and access
The county estimates about five months of work from the Aug. 3, 2026 closure. The Township’s July 30, 2026 notice anticipated reopening in mid-December 2026. Five months from Aug. 3 extends into early January 2027, later than the Township’s stated expectation. The county project page was last updated Aug. 3, 2026; LocalWhy has not reviewed a later notice or extension.
The record says the bridge is closed to pedestrians and does not describe a shuttle, a temporary crossing or a school-bus accommodation. It also does not report traffic counts on the detour routes or any arrangement for emergency response. Township Committee meetings allow three minutes per speaker during privilege of the floor, which is the local forum for detour or access questions.
Warren and County records
Two primary records carry the facts here: the county project page and the Township’s July 30 news item. The county page gives the contract award, the pre-construction meeting, the closure time, the structure description and the detour routes. The Township item repeats the start date, the detour routes and the mid-December estimate.
The two records differ on one detail of spelling: the county page’s Aug. 3 update writes ‘Dillion Court,’ while the Township’s July 30 alert writes ‘Dillon Court.’ The county page gives the closure time as 3:30 p.m.; the Township alert says only ‘Monday, August 3.’
No Township Committee minutes in the review window mention the closure. The county’s detour plan, project location map and display boards are linked from its project page but were not downloaded, and the TAPinto article’s text was not retrieved.
